We’re always welcoming new pieces and contributions from writers and intellectuals who live in the Arab world or self-identify as Arabs!

We accept submissions through our email directly (more info below), or through Duosuma:

We accept work that broadly falls into the categories of Arts and Philosophy and have a strong preference for new and emerging Arab writers.

Within Arts we accept creative writing in all its forms; fiction, nonfiction, verse, prose, and experimental writing. Within Philosophy we accept essays, stories, and musings that show some degree of critical thought (not necessarily strictly philosophy). Essays should be catered to a general audience, as opposed to strictly academic. Think a third-year university essay at max.

We accept written work that ranges from 300 to 5000 words. We may accept longer work, which we will split up. If you have multiple shorter submissions, please group them together into one document, up to five submissions. Please double space and use a size 12 font with serifs for English (such as Times New Roman). Please send us your work in the form of a Word Document, or another editable format via email. Work that does not comply with these necessary readability requirements will be automatically sent back.

We would prefer one document at a time from any single contributor, please wait to hear back from us before resubmitting. We are fine with simultaneous submissions as long as we are informed ASAP if the work is accepted elsewhere.

We will do our best to provide substantive feedback if your work is not right for our magazine.

If you would prefer to remain anonymous, we publish under the house name Jamal al-Dunya.

At present, we cannot pay contributors as we are a volunteer-run, unfunded initiative. We hope to, however, compile and print work accepted for publication periodically into copies for the contributors and available for purchase for the general public. You may withdraw consent for your work being present in printed form, and waive your right to a contributor copy at any point prior to the printing of the copies. We retain the right to refrain from printing works published online. At present this is a faraway dream, but if your work is chosen for physical printing we will contact you with additional details.

It is our opinion at Tawahan that until an Artificial Intelligence can throw a slice of mortadella at a cat while smoking a cigarette it is neither human nor Arab. (No AI submissions please).

If previously unpublished work is accepted, any and all re-publications of said work will cite Tawahan as the original publisher by including said language below the article: “This article originally appeared on Tawahan.com.” All copyright and intellectual property rights remain with the original author of the piece, while Tawahan claims “first publishing rights” for electronic, print, and audio publication (i.e., right of first refusal).

By sending us your work you agree to the following points

  • I have read and understand the submission guidelines

In your email please include the name of the piece, your name (unless you’d prefer to remain anonymous and be published as Jamal al-Dunya), and a short bio.

Upon sending us your work via email you’ll be added to our newsletter. If you’d prefer not to, please inform us in the body of your email.
